The effect on manganese toxicity on the nitrogen fixing symbiosis in Phaseolus vulgaris was studied. In 4 laboratory experiments the resistence to manganese of 20 strains of Rhizobium phaseoli, growing in liquid culture medium with different H-ion concentrations, was studied. Three greenhouse experiments werw carried out to observe manganese toxicity effects on plant growth, nodulation and nitrogen fixation, at two H-ion concentrations and at three calcium levels. Rhizobium growth was affected only by manganese concentrations above 100 ppm, when the Ph of the medium was above 6.0. At pH4.6 however, 25 ppm manganese were toxic to most of the strains. Different strains varied in their sensitivity to manganese and to high H-ion concentrations but the two effects were independent of each other. plant passage in normal plants or in plants showing manganese toxicity symptoms and containing more than 1200 ppm manganese, had no effect on the ability of the strains to grow in culture medium containing high manganese concentrations. Manganese concentrations of 12.5 and 25.0 ppm on a sand weight basis reduced the total nitrogen in plants per pot by 13% when ammonium nitrate was the nitrogen source. The total nitrogen in the plant dependent on symbiotic nitrogen fixation was reduced by 30 t0 60% depending on the inoculated strain of Rhizobium phaseoli. Increasing manganese levels reduced the dry weight and nitrogen content of plants, the nodule number and size, the nodule weight and the hemoglobin and nitrogen content in......
